About Perika

The Perika Kshatriya, also known as the Puragiri Kshatriya or Giri Rāzu

Perika Kshatriya

Perika is a caste found in states like Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra. It is the 15th caste in Group B of the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Backward Castes List . It can be said to be a Kshatriya sub-caste. By profession, they are farmers and landowners. Many believe that the word Perika is derived from the Sanskrit word Vyaparak. There are also IAS and IPS among them. The Perika Bhavan in Khairatabad, Hyderabad, is providing accommodation and educating people of this caste. The main occupation of the Perikas is agriculture.

In the past, they used to sell goods (bargain) and products obtained from agriculture on their bullock carts and also did business, so they also became accustomed to the profession of business. That is, they used to do both business and trade in parallel. They are very skilled in farming and are skilled in cultivating all kinds of crops. They also used to do business (mitti) with the income obtained from agriculture. Due to the changing times in the current society, most people are paying attention to education and pursuing higher education and doing jobs in the government and private sectors.

Caste History: The Original Traders In History

The original traders in history, today the weakest class are the Perikas - Suravaram Pratapa Reddy. During the barter period, traders used to put their goods in gunny bags and transport them on bullock carts. The name Perikas has become established for the traders who did business in this way. That group of traders transformed into the 'Perika' caste. Therefore, it was also mentioned in the censuses of 1891 and 1901 that the Perika caste was the one who carried salt and grains by means of perikas on bullock carts .

In the 12th century, trade within the country was carried out on carts. References to perikas filled with various goods are found in the Kakatiya inscriptions. Those who used perikas to trade formed a community over time. Marxist historian Kambhampati Satyanarayana has stated that the Perikas eventually evolved into a separate caste, one of the fourth castes, by practicing only intermarriage. In the state of Telangana, the Perikas are called Perikas and Perika Ayyavars. In the year 1953, all the leaders of the Perikas came together to establish the Perika Hostel in the Usman Sahi area of Hyderabad, in the heart of the state capital.

Caste Struggle

The Mythology

In the past, the name "Perika" gradually became established as a caste name for the tribes who lived by transporting goods on perikas and that was their main occupation. According to the mythology, in the ancient ages, these Kshatriyas, unable to stand up to the might of Parashurama and fight, prayed to Shiva, and as per his orders, they put perikas on bullocks and carried on business with them. However, today, the Perikas are farmers in all parts of the state.

All the communities in the BCs have caste professions and receive some form of assistance from the government, but only the Perika caste members have been farming for generations and the state leaders of the Perika Sangam have called for a boycott of the government for not providing any welfare to them. There is a saying that Turakalasedyam Perikalapala

Legend

Kartavirya Arjuna, a descendant of Haihaya, was born without arms due to a curse. He performed great penance, pleased Dattatreya, obtained a thousand arms, and became a great hero. Once, the great king went hunting and reached the hermitage of Jamadagni, exhausted. The sage gave Kartavirya Arjuna and his family a meal with five dishes. Seeing the sage's excitement, Kartavirya Arjuna was surprised and asked the reason for this. Jamadagni told him that this was possible because of a cow belonging to the offspring of Kamadhenu. The great king asked him to give him the cow. Jamadagni refused. Kartavirya Arjuna forcibly took the cow away.Parashurama came home and realized the matter, went to Mahishmati and fought with Kartavirya Arjuna and cut off his thousand hands and head with his Akhand Parashu. When he told his father about this, his father reprimanded him and asked him to visit the holy places. ===>>>

Legend

===>>> He visited various holy places for a year and returned. As time passed like this, Renuka once went to the pond to get water. There, she was watching the Gandharvas having fun, so her return was delayed. Jamadagni, angry, ordered his sons to kill her. The eldest sons did not agree to this. Jamadagni ordered Parashurama to kill his mother and brothers, but he did as his father told him. Jamadagni was happy and asked him to ask for some boon, but Parashurama asked him to save his mother and brothers. In this way, Parashurama brings his mother and brothers back to life. One day, when Parashurama is not at home, the sons of Kartavirya Arjuna cut off the head of Jamadagni and take it to Mahishmati. Parashurama's mother Renuka falls on her father's dead body and cries 21 times. Parashurama goes to Mahishmati and kills the sons of Kartavirya Arjuna and brings back the head of Jamadagni and sticks it in medlar to revive him.

After that, Parashurama becomes angry with the entire Kshatriya race and attacks them 21 times and destroys the Kshatriya clans. Parashurama fills the 5 lakes called Shyamantaka Panchakama with the blood of the Kshatriyas and offers tarpan to his parents. A few kings like Dasharatha hide in the herds of cows and escape. Perika Kshatriyas:- According to the Mahabharata, the Brahmin Parashurama, in anger, undertook a campaign to completely destroy the Kshatriya race. At that time, a few Kshatriyas escaped death by claiming to be merchants. However, they were neither cowards nor liars. It is said that a few Kshatriyas, after retiring from their positions, went to the hilly areas and settled there, and in time they became the Puragiri Kshatriyas (Kshatriyas who previously lived in the hills). The names of the Puragiri Kshatriyas end with Anna, Ayya, Rao, Raya, Rayudu, Varma, and Raju.
